CalHospitalCompare.org Praised as a National Model for Quality Reporting
The Center for Studying Health System Change
(HSC) praised CalHospitalCompare as a “success
story” for being “thoughtfully designed and
implemented and presenting usable and useful
quality information.” CalHospitalCompare is the
centerpiece of the California Hospital
Assessment and Reporting Taskforce’s (CHART)
work to expand the availability of quality
information to consumers and aid in their health
care decisions.
HSC lauded CalHospitalCompare’s presentation of data, in a
multi-tiered system, using “multiple benchmarks and a five-point rating
scale helps to create enough distinct categories that consumers can
identify superior and inferior performers for each measure.” HSC noted
this breakthrough was possible because CHART worked with hospitals from
the start to get their input and buy-in on a system that would report
real differences in a fair, responsible manner.
HSC also praised CalHospitalCompare for providing hospitals with
patient level spreadsheets on current public measures and others still
in development, allowing hospitals the information they need to address
their shortcomings and improve the quality of care in California.
As a co-founder and steering committee member of CHART, CHCC is
greatly pleased with the progress of the program and the national
recognition it is receiving. CHCC is committed to continue working with
CHART to continue expansion and improvement of the measures it reports.
We encourage more Californians to take advantage of its services.
